Pediatric Surgery Procedures and Radiology Boot Camp

The purpose of the Pre Conference workshop is to enhance the knowledge and skill of attendees caring for pediatric surgery patients undergoing common procedures and radiology studies.


Upon completion of the pre-conference workshop attendees will:

  1. Be able to identify key steps related to pediatric radiology interpretation.
  2. Recognize and describe radiographic findings specific to common pediatric surgery diagnoses such as pneumothorax, pneumoperitoneum, pneumatosis, correct placement of CVL, and verification of gastrostomy tube placement.
  3. Identify and demonstrate key steps in the assessment, management, placement & removal of chest tubes, enteral feeding tubes, central venous lines and drainage tubes in pediatric patients.

Common Radiology Studies in Pediatric Surgery: A Scenario Based Approach to Interpretation for the Pediatric Nurse and Provider


Round Table/ Skills Station with Audience Participation:

2:45 PM - 4:45 PM: Skills Stations (4 stations): 30 minutes each

Skill StationChest Tube Care & Management (Station 1)

  1. Understand and describe the need for chest tube placement and discuss the anatomy and physiology basics of chest tubes.
  2. Understand and describe the differences between suction and water seal/gravity and how to monitor chest tube function including air leaks and tiddling. Discuss how to troubleshoot chest tubes if not functioning properly and what to do in emergent situations.
  3. Discuss chest tube site care, supplies, insertion, maintenance of dressing, and removal of chest tube.

Skill StationCVL Care & Management (Station 2)

  1. Identify the different types of central venous catheters placed in children.
  2. Describe the key nursing considerations when removing a central line.
  3. Delineate the critical elements when repairing or declotting a tunneled silastic central venous catheter (Broviac, Hickman).

Skill StationEnteral Feedings Tubes (Station 3)

  1. Identify the types of Gastrostomies: Open vs. Laparoscopic.
  2. Describe troubleshooting techniques for common GT complications.
  3. Discuss the care of new and established Gastrostomy Tube.

Skill StationWound and Simple Drains (Station 4)

  1. Choose the appropriate wound dressing based on the understanding of general wound dressing categories coupled with knowledge of wound characteristics. Include care of wounds near drain sites.
  2. Describe the purpose of drains in the pediatric surgical patient and review the different kinds drains commonly used and rationale for each.
  3. Discuss the procedure of removing different kinds of drains including the opportunity to demonstrate the procedure.
