The Specialty of Pediatric Intestinal Failure Management
Introduction
Dr. Samuel Alaish gave his presentation at APNSA’s 2021 conference, entitled, “The Specialty of Pediatric Intestinal Failure Management”. Here he reviews the impact of an intestinal rehabilitation program can have for pediatric surgical patients. He discusses current medical and surgical management of pediatric short bowel syndrome, current research, and potential future options.

Dr. Samuel Alaish trained in Pediatric Surgery at the Babies and Children's Hospital of New York. He was on staff there briefly and then returned to Maryland. There, he founded the Children's Hospital Intestinal Rehabilitation Program at the University of Maryland in 2009 and then moved across town to establish the pediatric intestinal rehabilitation program at Johns Hopkins Children's Center, the THRIVE program. Dr. Alaish is the surgical director of the THRIVE program. He has a basic science laboratory in which he performs translational research to better understand the pathophysiology of short bowel syndrome and ways to augment adaptation. He won a Hartwell Foundation Biomedical Investigator award in 2016 for this work.
