Enteral Feeding Devices: Management in the Pediatric Patient
Introduction
This course was developed for nurses who have an interest in advancing their knowledge of the care of pediatric patients with enteral feeding devices. Content addresses evaluation, management and follow up for patients requiring enteral feeding devices. The learner will become familiar with various forms of enteral nutrition, including considerations to be mindful of when discussing tube feeding. Various types of tubes are discussed, and common post-operative complications and treatments are discussed. Replacement of nasogastric and low profile balloon gastrostomy tubes is reviewed. The content is applicable for both the bedside and advanced practice nurse.

Jackie Heying, MSN, APRN-CPNP
Jackie Heying received her Bachelors’ of Science Degree in Nursing from Winona State University in Winona, MN in 1987, and her Master’s of Science in Nursing, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the University of Minnesota in 1997, with a Children with Special Health Care Needs focus. She is board certified as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. She has been employed by Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN since 1987 in a wide variety of roles, including RN in the float nursing pool, Patient Education Specialist, APRN in the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Pulmonology, and in the Division of Pediatric Surgery and Trauma from 2008-2020. She has recently transitioned to the NP coordinator for the Mayo Clinic Children’s Center Aerodigestive Clinic. She was also a school nurse from 1990-1995. She currently provides care for children of all ages and their families who require multidisciplinary evaluation and ongoing care of complex feeding, swallowing and breathing disorders . Jackie has been instrumental in care management and developing patient educational materials including videos and booklets for their patient population with gastrostomy tubes and bowel management needs. She is actively involved in trainee education regarding enteral nutrition, and a resource regarding enteral devices to multiple care teams and committees.
